Extending your visa overseas

To extend your visa from home, you'll need to follow the application process in your home country.

Generally, the documents required are the same as if you were extending your visa in the UK. There are 4 differences.

  • You will need to fill in a different form - this will be online in most countries. For those countries not using the online form, you must fill in the VAF 9 paper form. You will need to take your documents to a Visa Application Centre (VAC). Read our guidance on the online application form.
  • Translations do not need to include details of the translator/translation company's credentials (qualifications/associations).
  • Police Registration Certificate for the UK: You do not need to provide this if applying overseas.
  • Application fee is £335 (instead of £457 if applying in the UK)

If you have any questions, please ask an adviser.

Biometric Residence Permits

UKVI regulations require non-EEA nationals, seeking permission from overseas to enter the UK for more than six months, to apply for a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).

If you apply from overseas and your visa application is successful, you will be issued with a short validity ‘travel’ sticker in your passport which will allow you to travel to the UK. You will receive a letter informing you of the decision to grant you a visa, which will also include notification that you must collect your Tier 4 visa, called Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), from the University of Bath or from your designated Post Office Branch (depending on the collection point you selected when making your visa application) within 10 days of arrival within the UK. We recommend that you select the University of Bath as your chosen collection point.
