Entitlement to UK Student Loans and Grants (ELQ, Previous Study and Repeat Years).

Equivalent or Lower Qualification

The government withdrew funding for students who hold an Higher Education (HE) qualification from anywhere in the world that is equivalent to or higher than the second course that they are studying. These students are defined as ELQ (Equivalent or Lower Qualification) students. ELQ students can be charged an unregulated fee such as the international tuition fee rate.

Please see the Student Finance Office web pages for the latest information.

Currently the UK Government is reviewing the provision of student loans and grants for students. The primary task of the review is to make recommendations on the future of fees policy and financial support for full and part-time students. HE Review

Previous Study, Repeat Years and Entitlement to UK Student Loans and Grants

The number of years you are able to apply for UK student funding is limited. The Student Support Regulations lay out clear rules on how many years you can access funding for Higher Education. Further support is not generally available to students who have used up their entitlement to funding, unless there are mitigating circumstances (Compelling Personal Reasons) that they can evidence to their relevant awarding authority.

Students needing to repeat an academic year, suspend or transfer should contact the Student Funding and Advice Team for advice on how your entitlement to student loans may be affected. Further information can be found here.

Students who already have an Honours Degree will not be entitled to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan or Maintenance Grant. However, those who are on a course leading to certain professional qualifications such as medical doctor, dentist, veterinarian, architect and social worker can apply for the Maintenance Loan only.

Supplementary grants such as Disabled Students Allowance, Parents Learning Allowance, Adult Dependants Grant and Childcare Grant are not affected by previous funding.
