Private Loans for U.S. Students

The only private loan currently available to U.S. students at foreign schools is the Smart Loan from Sallie Mae.

Note that terms and conditions on loans from private lenders are usually less favourable than those available through Title IV Direct Loans. So you should check your entitlement to these in the first instance before committing yourself to a private loan.

In addition, it’s a good idea to research what other funding may be available through scholarships or other charitable aid.

To apply for a Sallie Mae Smart Loan:

Step 1
• Download and complete the Cost of Attendance Spreadsheet from our web pages, (available 21 June 2013).
• Fully complete the personal details and use information from your SAR to help you complete Tab 3 (Basis of Costs) of the spreadsheet.
• Answer the questions in Tab 4 (checklist) of the spreadsheet.
• There are useful information tabs to help guide you in completing the form.
• If you are unsure about costs you will find some budget guides on our web pages. Adapt to suit your expected personal needs. We have a right to question or refuse any costs which we think unreasonable. Ensure you include any funding you will be receiving from other sources such as sponsorship, University scholarships etc.
• Applicants may borrow up to the Cost of Attendance limits which are set by the school.
• You can only apply for costs for the period studying e.g. postgraduate 12 months or undergraduate 9 months.
• Once completed please save this document and email it to us. If incomplete we will not process your application.

Step 2
Click on the link to Sallie Mae and apply on line and then send a copy of your e-signed Promissory Note to USLoans@bath.ac.uk together with your completed Cost of Attendance Spreadsheet. Private lenders require students to complete a Self Certification Form
• Ensure you read about their loan interest rates and terms and conditions.

If you don't send us your promissory note by email, we cannot certify your loan
