International Student Advice Service

Our international student advice team support all our international students during their studies. They have drop-in sessions or appointments on campus and have a number of useful services available:

  • pre-arrival advice and support
  • cultural and social orientation
  • advice and checking service for visa applications and extensions
  • general advice on invalid visas, refusals and appeals
  • welfare and support issues

Societies

During your studies it is important to feel involved with university life. Being part of a society is a great way to get involved in events and meet new people.

One of our popular associations is the African and Caribbean Society (ACS). Founded in 1996, they arrange a wide variety of activities and socials throughout the year.

These requirements will vary from subject to subject. You also need to look at course entry requirements in our undergraduate and postgraduate prospectuses.

Foundation Courses

West African Senior School Certificate

If you have studied for the West African Senior School Certificate we will normally require you to study a Foundation course before starting one of our undergraduate degree courses.

Undergraduate Degrees

A Level examinations and the International Baccalaureate (IB)

We welcome applications from students taking A Level examinations and the International Baccalaureate (IB) for direct entry into our undergraduate courses.

Postgraduate Taught Degrees

Bachelors degree from a prestigious university

We will consider holders of a Bachelors degree from a prestigious university in Nigeria for entry to a Masters degree. We normally look for a minimum GPA of between 3.0 and 3.5. If you have studied for your Bachelor’s degree in Nigeria you will not usually be required to meet additional conditions for English Language, such as an IELTS test.

Postgraduate Research Degrees

Masters level qualification from a prestigious university

In many cases, we require a Masters level qualification from a prestigious university for PhD entry. We expect evidence of some research experience (for example through a Masters degree project).

 

English language requirements

To study on the International Foundation Year you will need a minimum IELTS score of 5.5.

The minimum English Language requirement for our undergraduate courses is IELTs 6.0 - 7.0 or an equivalent qualification such as grade C in English in the SSCE or GCSE.

If you have studied for your bachelor’s degree in Nigeria, you will not normally be required to meet additional conditions for English Language, such as an IELTS test.

Scholarships and funding

Prospective international students are eligible for a number of scholarships. Most of these are for postgraduate taught students. Departments may also offer specific scholarships for their students. Find out more about Scholarships and Bursaries.

These are some of the scholarship and funding options available to students from your country:

International Scholarship Scheme

International students who have accepted an offer of study for MA/MSc can apply for the University of Bath International Scholarship Scheme. There are 75 scholarships of £3000 open to students from all countries.

Steve Huckvale Scholarships

The Steve Huckvale Scholarships are available for international students born in an African country who wish to study a postgraduate taught programme in the field of Engineering or Management. The purpose of this prestigious award is to assist candidates with academic merit and leadership potential in their studies here.

Chevening Scholarships

A number of external funding bodies exist to support Masters level study in the UK and any applicant seeking support is also strongly advised to explore potential sources of financial aid available in their own country. In many cases the British Council will have a number of awards on offer through the Chevening scheme and further details may be obtained from the British Council in Nigeria.
