MASH celebrates national award

Emma Cliffe named as national winner of 2016 Outstanding Contribution to Mathematics Support award

In recognition of her long-standing commitment to providing high quality, relevant and innovative mathematics support to students and staff in H.E., Dr Emma Cliffe was awarded the 2016 Outstanding Contribution to Mathematics & Statistics Support award during the national CETL-MSOR conference for practitioners of mathematics and statistics support.

Dr Emma Cliffe, MASH Development Officer, commented: I am thrilled to receive recognition from the sigma Network for contributions to mathematics and statistics support over the last 8 years. I am grateful for the many opportunities to contribute that have come through work within MASH, sigma and in collaboration with colleagues further afield. I am especially pleased that this award recognises the importance of ongoing work on access to mathematical subjects.

Since 2012, Emma has worked in MASH as the Development Officer although her connections to the centre extend back to 2009. She is a pioneer of mathematics accessibility nationally and is currently leading a national project, funded by the Institute of Physics, to ensure that disabled students across the country are able to access mathematical materials in appropriate ways for their particular needs. Within Bath, Emma has been instrumental in developing our programme of mathematics support for students entering the university with vocational qualifications.

Dr Jane White, Director of MASH, commented: We are very lucky to have Emma on the team in MASH. Her attention to detail, combined with her technical knowledge and understanding of the challenges that students face when learning mathematics, is exemplary. As Director of MASH, I am very grateful for everything that Emma does for the centre – without exception, it is of a high standard and contributes to making our service excellent. Emma is a very worthy recipient of this award.
