English language requirements

If your first language is not English you may be required to produce evidence of your English language proficiency. This is in addition to any academic entry requirements.

  • The Home Office regulations require all students entering into the UK with a Tier 4 visa to reach a minimum standard in English.
  • If you need a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK you will need to meet both the Home Office requirements and the specific entry requirements of the course you have applied to.
  • The Home Office rules state that applicants wishing to study at degree level or above must have achieved a B2 level in each of the four language components.
  • Tier 4 policy guidance is available on the Home Office website.
  • The Home Office has produced a list of approved English language qualifications.
  • Applicants who need to improve their English language skills may be able to attend a pre-sessional course during the summer with the Academic Skills Centre.

Minimum requirements

Only English language tests taken up to two years prior to the date that you are due to start your studies are valid for entrance purposes.

Check the requirements for individual courses in the postgraduate prospectus.
