Research degree fees

The following fees are for the 2013-14 academic session. Please check your Faculty or School for the fees for your programme of study.

Bench fees for research degrees

If you are a postgraduate research student you may also be charged a Training Support Fee (TSF). Details of this charge are specified in your offer letter and when you accept your offer of a place you accept the TSF in addition to your programme tuition fee.

Training Support Fees are sometimes called bench fees at other universities and although the titles may vary, they are all designed to provide funding to the department, allocated to assist the research project, and therefore to assist the student in their studies and in completing their PhD.

The grant can cover a wide variety of research-related items/activities – including project costs, incidental costs of research training, travel and conference attendance, laboratory consumables, printing, photocopying, books and laptops (where these are essential in order to carry out the research).

How they are used will depend on your particular research project and you will be able to discuss this in detail with your supervisor at the University. Please note that neither you nor any sponsor owns any equipment purchased with a TSF. Full title to such goods remains with the University.
