The six Research Councils are the main source of funding for PhD students from the UK and EU. The majority of this funding is given to universities to distribute rather than to students directly. Details of research council funding available from the University.

Research and some taught programmes in Humanities, Modern Languages and Architecture.
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
Research in Biological Sciences.
Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
Research and some taught programmes in Science, Engineering and Management.
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
Research in Social Sciences, Education and Management, and some taught programmes (not including any in the School of Management).
Medical Research Council
Research in Medicine-related subjects.
Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)
Research in Physics.
