Programme

Qualifications and durations

  • Full-time MSc 1 year

Overview

An MSc programme offers masters level training and a higher degree qualification. Three categories of applicants in particular are suitable for these programmes:

  • those whose first degree did not take them to the highest level and/or who may have had little or no practical research experience
  • those who wish to specialise further beyond their first degree in the named specialisation but do not foresee a research degree as the natural progression after graduating from this programme
  • those who have graduated in a different but related area of the biosciences but now wish to change directions and emerge as specialists in a new area.

If these do not apply, you might consider an MRes programme.

The MSc in BioSciences enables students to customise the course according to their needs and future career ambitions by selecting diverse topics and projects under guidance of the Director of Studies who advises on suitable taught units and laboratory projects.

Commonly chosen 6-credit units include:

  • Molecular mechanisms of disease
  • Enzymes in biotechnology and medicine
  • Cellular biochemistry
  • Current topics in gene regulation and cell differentiation
  • Molecular and medical neurobiology
  • Bioinformatics
  • Molecular biology of microbial adaptation
  • The evolution of genetic systems
  • Structural biology in biotechnology and medicine
  • Plant reproductive biology
  • Human developmental disorders
  • Molecular immunology
  • Practical molecular biology
  • Plant response to abiotic stress
  • Microbial genetics
  • Modern methods of researching neurodegeneration
