Qualifications and durations
- Full-time MSc 1 year
Overview
An MSc programme offers masters level training and a higher degree qualification. Three categories of applicants in particular are suitable for these programmes:
- those whose first degree did not take them to the highest level and/or who may have had little or no practical research experience
- those who wish to specialise further beyond their first degree in the named specialisation but do not foresee a research degree as the natural progression after graduating from this programme
- those who have graduated in a different but related area of the biosciences but now wish to change directions and emerge as specialists in a new area.
If these do not apply, you might consider an MRes programme.
This programme concentrates on understanding the molecular principles underlying the biology of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts. In particular we study gene expression and regulation, gene transfer, genome structure, epidemiology, cell communication, and pathogenicity and virulence factors.
Commonly chosen 6-credit units include:
- Infection and immunity
- Bacteriology
- Virology
- Microbial genetics
- Topics in environmental plant virology
- Microbial pathogenicity
- Plant-microorganism interactions
- Structural biology in biotechnology & medicine
- Microbial evolution - from the laboratory to nature
- Molecular evolution and phylogenetics
- Pathogenesis and immune evasion by microbes
- Molecular biology of microbial adaptation
