Programme

Qualifications and durations

  • Full-time MSc 1 year

Overview

An MSc programme offers masters level training and a higher degree qualification. Three categories of applicants in particular are suitable for these programmes:

  • those whose first degree did not take them to the highest level and/or who may have had little or no practical research experience
  • those who wish to specialise further beyond their first degree in the named specialisation but do not foresee a research degree as the natural progression after graduating from this programme
  • those who have graduated in a different but related area of the biosciences but now wish to change directions and emerge as specialists in a new area.

If these do not apply, you might consider an MRes programme.

This programme focuses on the integration of structural biology and bioinformatics approaches in order to understand the activity of proteins, including enzymes, antibodies and receptors, at a molecular level. This understanding provides a platform for techniques such as structure-based drug design, biocatalysis and protein engineering, which are the basis for many recent advances in biotechnology.

Available 6-credit units include:

  • Enzymology
  • Protein synthesis, folding and turnover
  • Enzymes: mechanisms, evolution and control in integrated biological systems
  • Enzymes in biotechnology & medicine
  • Structural biology in biotechnology & medicine
  • Molecular Immunology
  • Medical biochemistry
