Transition to HE
Starting university can be a very daunting prospect for many young people, particularly if they are moving away from home for the first time.
Our ‘Arriving and Surviving’ talks give a broad overview of the university environment, offer advice on preparing for university and provide opinion from a student perspective.
Our student ambassadors can also provide honest, relatable, personal experiences.
The best way to prepare students for their transition to Higher Education is to provide information on what to expect and how to prepare. It's also useful to help manage their expectations and advise on what support is available.
Things to consider include:
- what are the differences between studying at school or college and university?
- what should students expect when living independently, if they choose to move away from home?
- how should they prepare and what do they need to do before they go?
- what they should take with them to university?
- what is the best way to settle in to a new environment?
- what should they expect in the first week, widely known as Freshers’ week?
- what is the range of support available to students at university?
“ The style of learning is different; at school you can get away with buying a revision guide and cramming, but at university there is no revision guide, you have to learn things for yourself in your own way. ”
