Professor Bernie Morley

We want to encourage applications from all students who can benefit from studying at the University of Bath - regardless of background.

— Professor Bernie Morley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching

Although student numbers have increased in recent years some groups are still under-represented in Higher Education.

Universities have fewer students from families without a background of Higher Education or with lower incomes, with disabilities, from a care background, from certain minority ethnic groups or holding vocational qualifications.

What do we do?

We provide a wide range of widening participation activities designed for under-represented groups who have the potential to benefit from Higher Education.

The Widening Participation Office works in collaboration with local schools and colleges, and other universities to:

  • develop tailor-made programmes of activity to raise attainment and aspirations negotiated with collaborating schools and colleges
  • offer a general programme of events such as taster days and summer schools
  • encourage progression into higher education through On Track to Bath our intensive programme of activity for selected year 12 – 13 students
  • support successful transition into Higher Education.

Care leavers and students with learning difficulties and disabilities can also benefit from activities specifically designed to meet their needs.

We also offer advice and support to mature students who are interested in returning to education.

Our activities are supported by trained Student Ambassadors and tutors.
