Summer schools
Our residential summer schools are a great opportunity for school and college students to experience life at a research-led university, explore a subject in more depth, work on a project or develop some new skills. Students can gain valuable information and advice about progression to Higher Education as well as meeting staff and current students.
We currently offer two residential Summer Schools
We work with the universities of Bristol and Exeter to run Year 11 Summer Schools in July after GCSEs have been completed.
The focus of the summer schools is to support academically-able students in developing their personal learning and thinking skills and independent study skills in preparation for sixth form studies. We aim to introduce new subject areas and support their progression to Higher Education. There will be information and advice about:
- how to choose the right course
- how to make the most effective UCAS application
- how to manage the financial side of university including fees and funding.
The summer schools are intended for students who are defined by their schools as academically gifted and are expected to achieve A*, A and B grades at GCSE including maths and English. Priority is given to students who also meet one or more eligibility criteria (please see below) which might suggest that they would particularly benefit from this kind of support.
This is a great opportunity for students from across the South West to come together to share an experience of university life and benefit from the facilities and opportunities the universities have to offer.

Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for these Summer Schools students must meet both of the following criteria:
- be in Year 11 at a target school in the South West of England
- should be defined by the school as academically gifted and/or expected to achieve mostly A*, A and B grades at GCSE including Maths and English.
The opportunity would particularly benefit those students who might be under-aspiring in terms of their choice of university or might be considering somewhat limited progression. Therefore, priority is given to students who meet one or more eligibility criteria:
- comes from a home where neither parent attended university in the UK or abroad
- is, or has been, a looked-after young person
- lives in ‘low participation’ neighbourhood as defined by home postcode
- is in receipt of, or entitled to, free school meals
- has experienced difficult family or individual circumstances that have affected their performance in exams or the likelihood of their going to university.
Please email widening-participation@bath.ac.uk for further information.
This three-day residential is an opportunity for local further education college students studying a BTEC in Computer Science, Engineering or Sports Science to spend time at the University. Students will see how maths is used at university by getting ‘hands on’ with a maths problem.
During this three-day residential students will experience student life on campus by completing a project in their subject, whilst working in an academic department alongside lecturers and students currently at the University.
Students will also experience the social side of student life. In the evenings they will have the chance to relax with other students and take part in sports activities, a film night and sessions run by our University clubs and societies.
