Chemistry for Drug Discovery

Entry requirements

A Levels

Typical Offer: AAB

In some circumstances we will make a reduced offer of ABB and we welcome applications from candidates with predicted grades of ABB or above.

Essential:

  • minimum of grade B in A2 Chemistry
  • in addition to A2 Chemistry, at least one other A2 level subject should
    be Maths, Physics or Biology
  • General Studies and Critical Thinking are excluded
  • GCSE Mathematics (B) and English Language (C) (or equivalent) required
  • languages which are intended for non-native speakers are not normally acceptable when taken by native speakers of that language.

Access to HE Diploma

Each application is treated on its merits, but as a guide we would expect a student to pass the Access to HE Diploma (in Science or Science and Engineering), with at least 39 credits achieved from units awarded at Merit or Distinction, including at least 33 credits awarded at Distinction. This must include 12 credits from units in chemistry awarded at Distinction. Applicants must also achieve GCSE equivalence in English and maths, if equivalent qualifications have not already been achieved.

 

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a high academic standard and may be invited to attend an interview.

 

BTEC

BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science: DDD

Specific requirements are normally:

  • Distinction in Mandatory Units 1, 3, 4 and 6
  • Distinction in Specialist Units 7, 8, 19, 22, 26, 27 and 28
  • Distinction in at least 4 other Specialist Units.

BTEC Diplomas and Subsidiary Diplomas in science subjects, with Distinction grades, will be considered where they are offered in combination with A Level Chemistry at grade B or above. Other BTEC Level 3 qualifications will be considered where they are offered in combination with A Level Chemistry (at grade B or above) and one other A2 Level subject from: Maths, Biology or Physics.

Essential level 2 requirement:

  • GCSE Mathematics (B) and English Language (C) (or equivalent) required

Cambridge Pre-U

Typical Offer: D3, D3, M2 including Chemistry and one other science subject.

Diplomas

The Advanced Diploma in Engineering and the Advanced Diploma in Environmental and Landbased Studies will be considered at grade A/B where it is presented with A level Chemistry at grade B as Additional/Specialist Learning.

Principal Learning grade B or above

Extended Project grade A

Essential level 2 requirement:

GCSE Mathematics (B) and English Language (C) (or equivalent) required

European Baccalaureate

Typical Offer: 77% overall, with at least 77% in Chemistry and 77% in another science/mathematics.

International Baccalaureate

Typical Offer: 35 points, including Chemistry at HL6 and no less that 5 in two other Higher Level subjects.

International Students

English Language Qualifications:

We normally require all applicants whose first language is not English to provide evidence of English language proficiency and we may ask you to take an English language test.
The minimum requirement for  Chemistry programmes is: IELTS 6.5 with no mark less than 6.0 in any of the elements. Applicants should submit their results by 31st July. For a list of other English language qualifications we accept please go to the English Language Entry Requirements web page.

Irish Leaving Certificate

Typical Offer: AAABBB at higher level which must include Chemistry.

Open University Credits

Exploring Science S104, an overall mark of 70% or above to include a 
minimum of 80% in the Chemistry Assignment 4 and a pass in Practising Science SXR103.

Scottish Highers

Typical Offer: AAABB at Higher Level with AA at Advanced Higher level which must include Chemistry.

Welsh Baccalaureate

Candidates offering the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma which includes suitable A levels are likely to be made an alternative offer of AAB or ABB plus the Welsh Baccalaureate Core.  Please see the A level entry for subject combination details.
