Childhood, Youth and Education Studies

Subject in detail

Subject aims

The degree is delivered jointly by the Departments of Education and Psychology, providing you with a unique blend of social science modules that relate to the study of children and young people.

This programme aims to:

  • give you an in-depth understanding of the social and developmental contexts of childhood and youth
  • explore government priorities relating to children's lives and wellbeing and how these link to integrated children's services and the role education plays in multi-agency working
  • prepare you for a variety of careers relating to children, youth and family services, including teaching.

Teaching and learning

Linking the disciplines of education, psychology, sociology and philosophy, the first part of the course will enable you to develop both academic knowledge and the skills to evaluate policy and practice.

In your third year, you will have the opportunity to spend a year on a placement in an appropriate organisation associated with children and young people. This experience will develop your knowledge and understanding and allow you to consider more deeply your interests and preferences in preparation for future employment.

The final part of the course gives you the opportunity to specialise according to your interests and preferences for future employment, through units that focus specifically on contemporary issues concerning childhood and adolescence.

Methods of assessment

By coursework, practical assessment, portfolio work and examination.
