Placements and careers

Placements

You will have the opportunity to spend up to twelve months on work placement in your third year.  Placements give you excellent hands-on experience and help you decide where your specific interests lie.  This experience will develop your knowledge and understanding and allow you to consider more deeply your interests and preferences in preparation for future employment.  This also gives you a competitive advantage when applying for jobs.

Our students have previously spent their placement year working in the UK or overseas at charities, research institutes and at local, national and international schools.

Some of the places our students have worked at include:

  • City Year
  • Warminster School
  • Platform 51
  • Body & Soul
  • Cornwall Council

Applications for placement can be very competitive and it is your responsibility to secure the position, but at all times you will be supported by our placements team.

Careers

The degree prepares you for employment within a range of services for children and young people, for example teaching, childcare, social work, youth work or special needs. It also enables you to work with non-governmental organisations whose concern is the welfare of children, their families and young people. Achieving a 2:1 or above will give you the opportunity to study for a higher degree and pursue an academic career in the social sciences.
