International Management and Modern Languages

Subject in detail

Subject aims

Three closely integrated strands run throughout the IMML degree:

  • Core Management
  • Core Language
  • The Interface

The first year focuses on the basic disciplines of management and the chosen language (either French, Spanish or German), while the interface in year one looks at the legal environments of the UK and France, Germany or Spain.

Year two follows a more vocational approach, preparing you for the year abroad. The interface in year two looks at the European business environment and perspectives on Europe or Latin America.

In the final year of your degree, management and language are studied in an international business context. You also have the opportunity to move into specialist areas of management, perhaps based on interests developed during your year abroad. The interface in year four looks at the internationalisation of business and the position of France, Germany or Spain and Latin America in the global economy.

Teaching and learning

You will experience a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, project work, presentations, and practical workshops.  You may be asked to analyse case studies or video-based material, take part in a role-play, or visit companies and other organisations throughout the programme.

Each student is allocated a personal tutor where one-to-one academic support is given to help you with your learning throughout the duration of your course.

The University’s online learning support system, Moodle, is available to all students.

Methods of assessment

Units are assessed individually with methods of assessment varying according to the nature of the subject being taught. Methods of assessment are likely to include unseen examinations, practical reports, essays, oral and poster presentations, data interpretation, problem solving and placement report.
