Entry requirements

Personal statements
Your personal statement should demonstrate a genuine interest in Modern Languages and Management Studies, expressed through enthusiasm and knowledge about certain social, political or cultural aspects, as well as awareness and enthusiasm for the field of Management. It should be well written with no careless mistakes and we encourage you to avoid anything too formulaic or too general in scope. We are interested in you and the reasons why you want to study on the programme in International Management and Modern Languages.

A Levels

Typical Offer: A2: AAB for German, AAB for French, AAA for Spanish

In exceptional circumstances, we may make a slightly lower offer (typically ABB) for IMML with German.

Essential

  • Grade A at A2 in the target language required
  • GCSEs: English, the target language and Mathematics, Grade B or above
  • General Studies is excluded
  • Critical Thinking will not normally form part of the offer

Desirable
Grade A in the target language is the main specification, and the combination of other subjects is fairly flexible. Please contact Admissions if you would like to discuss your subject choices. Evidence of a good command of English and of numeracy skills is essential.

Languages which are intended for non-native speakers are not normally acceptable when taken by native speakers of that language

Access to HE Diploma

We welcome applications from students studying Access to HE Diplomas, who are also able to offer an A Level at Grade A in the relevant language, or another qualification in the relevant language that meets the B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.  Language qualifications must be recent, or applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are using the language regularly at a high level.  Applicants may be contacted to assess this.  As Access courses vary greatly across the country, we encourage you to contact Admissions to discuss course requirements and appropriate units of study before applying through UCAS.

Each application will be considered on an individual basis but all applicants will be expected to have the following:

Essential:

  • GCSE equivalence in English, if an equivalent qualification has not already been achieved.
  • Level 3 mathematics at Distinction or Merit, or grade B at GCSE mathematics

BTEC

Applicants with BTEC Level 3 qualifications will only be considered if they can also offer an A Level in the relevant language at grade A, or another qualification in the relevant language that meets the B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Essential:

GCSEs: English and Mathematics at grade B or above.

Cambridge Pre-U

Typical Offer:

French: D3, D3, M1, with French at D3

German: D3, D3, M1, with German at D3

In exceptional circumstances, we may be able to make a slightly lower offer (typically D3, M1, M1) for IMML with German.

Spanish: D3, D3, D3, with Spanish at D3.

European Baccalaureate

Typical Offer:  80% for German, 80% for French, 85% for Spanish. All with a minimum of 80% in the relevant language.

In exceptional circumstances, we may make a lower offer (typically 75%) for IMML with German.

 

 

French Baccalaureate

Typical Offer:

German: average of 14, with 14 in German, English and numeracy.

In exceptional circumstances, we may be able to make a slightly lower offer (typically 13) for IMML with German.

Spanish: average of 15, with 14 in Spanish, English and numeracy.

 

 

German Abitur

Typical Offer:

French: Grade of 1.5 overall required. You will need a grade of at least 13 in French, English and maths.

Spanish: Grade of 1.3 overall required. You will need a grade of at least 13 in Spanish, English and maths.

 

 

International Baccalaureate

Typical Offer:

IB: 35 for German, 35 for French, 37 for Spanish (including bonus points) with Higher Level 6 in the relevant language. 

Standard Level Mathematics at Grade 5 or higher and Standard Level English at Grade 5 or equivalent are also required.

 

In exceptional circumstances, we may make a slightly lower offer (typically 33) for IMML with German.

International Students

We accept a wide range of non-UK qualifications as entry either to our Foundation Year or directly on to the first year of our undergraduate programmes. For further information please visit our International Office web page.

English Language Qualifications:

We require all applicants whose first language is not English to provide evidence of English language proficiency and we may ask you to take an English language test.

The minimum requirement for applicants whose first language is not English is IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any component. Applicants should submit their results by 31st July. Irish Leaving Certificate

Typical Offer:

French: AAABBB at Higher level, which must include an A in French.

German: AAABBB at Higher level, which must include an A in German.

In exceptional circumstances, we may be able to make a lower offer (typically AABBBB) for IMML with German.

Spanish: AAAABB at Higher Level, which must include an A in Spanish.

 

Scottish Highers

Typical Offer:

French: AAABB plus 2 Advanced Highers at AA. Must include French at Advanced Higher grade A.

German: AAABB plus 2 Advanced Highers at AB. Must include German at Advanced Higher grade A.

(In exceptional circumstances, we may be able to make a slightly lower offer (typically AABBBB) for IMML with German) 

Spanish: AAAAB plus 2 Advanced Highers at AA. Must include Spanish at Advanced Higher grade A.

Welsh Baccalaureate

We welcome applicants offering the Welsh Bacc Core alongside A levels; we are aware of the range of skills and qualities which it develops and of the additional work which it demands.  Please see the A level entry for subject combination details.
