Language and Politics

Entry requirements

Personal Statement:

Your personal statement should demonstrate a genuine interest in languages and the social, political and cultural aspects of the country you want to focus on. You should also provide some evidence of a specific interest in politics. This could include, for example, involvement in political debating societies, voluntary work for charities or activism for a political party or an NGO.

A Levels

Typical Offer: AAB-ABB

  • an A in the language to be studied is usually required for Language & Politics programmes
  • Italian has a beginners and an advanced stream. Russian is only offered at beginners level. Students choosing to begin a language from scratch should have a good grade at GCSE or equivalent in a foreign language
  • General Studies is excluded
  • GCSE English Language grade C or above, or equivalent required
  • preference will be given to applicants who provide evidence of a strong interest in politics and/or international relations.

Access to HE Diploma

  • French and Politics

  • Spanish and Politics

These programmes welcome applications from students studying Access to HE Diplomas, who are also able to offer an A Level at grade A in the relevant language, or another qualification in the relevant language that meets the B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.  Language qualifications must be recent, or applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are using the language regularly at a high level.  Applicants may be contacted to assess this and may be invited to attend an interview at the University.

In addition to the language qualification, applicants will be required to pass the Access to HE Diploma, with at least 30 credits achieved from units awarded at Distinction and 9 credits achieved at Merit or Distinction. Applicants must also achieve GCSE equivalence in English, if an equivalent qualification has not already been achieved.

Cambridge Pre-U

Typical Offer: D3, D3, M2 - D3, M2, M2

Essential:

  • D3 in the language to be studied unless it is being taken from ab initio level.

European Baccalaureate

80-75 % overall with 80% in one language is normally required, except when the language is to be studied from ab initio level. (Italian has a beginners and an advanced stream. Russian is for beginners only.)

International Baccalaureate

Typical Offer: 36-34. 6 in language at Higher Level is preferred, except when the language is to be studied from ab initio level. (Italian has a beginners and an advanced stream. Russian has beginners only.)

International Students

English Language Qualifications:

We would normally require all applicants whose first language is not English to provide evidence of English language proficiency and we may ask you to take an English language test.

The minimum requirement for Modern Language Studies is IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in all components. Applicants should submit their results by 31st July. For a list of other English language qualifications we accept please go to the English Language Entry Requirements web page.
