Modern Languages and European Studies
Entry requirements
Personal Statement:
Your personal statement should demonstrate a genuine interest in languages and European studies, expressed through enthusiasm and knowledge about certain social, political or cultural aspects, as well as general cultural awareness. It should be well written with no careless mistakes and we encourage you to avoid anything too formulaic or obviously constructed by someone else. We are interested in you and the reasons why you want to study on our Modern Languages and European Studies programme.
A Levels
Typical Offer: A2: ABB; AAA for RR14 (French & Spanish)
- in exceptional circumstances we may make a slightly lower offer.
Essential:
- both of the languages to be studied are required at A2 level, except when the language is to be studied from ab initio level. An A in one of the two languages is normally required. An A in both languages is preferred for RR14 (French & Spanish)
- Italian has a beginners and an advanced stream. Russian is only offered at beginners level. Students choosing to begin a language from scratch should have a good grade at GCSE or equivalent in a foreign language
- General Studies is excluded
- GCSE English Language grade C or above, or equivalent required.
Bilingual students:
We would not normally encourage applications from bilingual students when they want to study one or more of the languages which they already speak fluently. Please contact the Admissions Tutor, Dr Nina Parish (n.parish@bath.ac.uk), for guidance on this matter.
Access to HE Diploma
We welcome applications from students studying Access to HE Diplomas, who are also able to offer an A Level at grade A in the relevant language/s, or another qualification in the relevant language/s that meets the B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Language qualifications must be recent, or applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are using the language/s regularly at a high level. Applicants may be contacted to assess this. As Access courses vary greatly across the country, you may wish to contact Admissions to discuss course requirements and appropriate units of study before applying through UCAS.
Each application will be considered on an individual basis but all applicants will be expected to have the following:
Essential:
Applicants must achieve GCSE equivalence in English, if an equivalent qualification is not already held.
BTEC
Applicants with BTEC Level 3 qualifications will be considered where they are also able to offer an A Level in the relevant language/s at grade A, or another qualification in the relevant language/s that meets the B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Essential
- GCSE English at grade C or above, or equivalent.
Cambridge Pre-U
Typical Offer:
D3, D3, M2 - D3, M2, M2,
D3, D3, D3 for French and Spanish
Essential
- Both languages to be studied are required as Principal Subjects, except when a language is to be studied from ab initio level.
- Must include D3 in one of the languages to be studied.
European Baccalaureate
Typical Offer: 75 % overall with 80% in one language and 75% in the other language is normally required, except when the language is to be studied from scratch.
80 % for RR14 French and Spanish. 80% in both languages is preferred.
French Baccalaureate
Typical Offer: 13/20 overall with 14 in one language and 13 in the other language is normally required, except when the language is to be studied from scratch.
15/20 for RR14 French and Spanish. 14 in both languages is preferred.
International Baccalaureate
Typical Offer: 34 points. to include 2 languages at Higher Level with 6 in one language and 5 in the other, except except where the language is to be studied from ab initio level.
36 points for RR14 French and Spanish. 6 in both languages at Higher Level is preferred.
International Students
We accept a wide range of non-UK qualifications as entry either to our Foundation Year or directly on to the first year of our undergraduate programmes. For further information please visit our International Office web page.
English Language Qualifications:
We would normally require all applicants whose first language is not English to provide evidence of English language proficiency and we may ask you to take an English language test.
The minimum requirement for Modern Language Studies is IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in all components. Applicants should submit their results by 31st July. For a list of other English language qualfications we accept please go to the English Language Entry Requirements web page
Irish Leaving Certificate
Typical Offer: AABBBB at Higher level with an A in the relevant languages. AAAAAB at higher level for RR14.
Scottish Highers
Typical Offer: AAAAB- AABBB at Higher level to include two Advanced Highers at AB - AA in the relevant languages.
Welsh Baccalaureate
We welcome applicants offering the Welsh Baccalaureate Core alongside A levels; we are aware of the range of skills and qualities which it develops and of the additional work which it demands. Please see the A level entry for subject combination details.
