Politics and International Relations

Entry requirements

Personal Statement:

A good personal statement will demonstrate your enthusiasm for the course you are applying for. You therefore need to explain why you are interested in the course and it would be helpful if you can provide some evidence of your specific interest in politics. This could include, for example, involvement in political debating societies, voluntary work for charities, activism for a political party or an NGO.

A Levels

Typical Offer: A2: AAA

  • in exceptional circumstances we may make a slightly lower offer.

Essential

  • English Language GCSE Grade C or above or an equivalent English Language qualification required
  • AS: Not normally included in offer.  However, AS level grades are taken as indication of A2 performance in conjunction with predicted grades. Candidates are required to indicate their AS grades (not UMS score) in the application even if they are not being certificated. Where the application does not contain this information clearly, decisions may be delayed or even eventually rejected Applicants should contact their school to ensure this information is made available to us as early as possible
  • General Studies is excluded
  • languages intended for non-native speakers are not normally acceptable when taken by native speakers of that language.

Desirable:

Preference will be given to applicants who provide evidence of a strong interest in politics and/or international relations, this can demonstrated by:

  • examples given of relevant extra-curricular activity/reading in the personal statement
  • relevant work experience
  • relevant qualifications.

Access to HE Diploma

We welcome applications from students studying an Access to HE Diploma.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a high academic standard. If your application indicates that you may be suitable for our programme, you may be invited to attend an interview at the University.

Typical offer:

Pass the Access to HE Diploma, with at least 36 credits achieved from units awarded at Distinction and 3 credits achieved at Merit or Distinction. Applicants must also achieve GCSE equivalence in English, if an equivalent qualification has not already been achieved.

Cambridge Pre-U

Typical Offer: D3, D3, D3

European Baccalaureate

Typical Offer: 80%

French Baccalaureate

15 with a minimum of 14 in the English Language component

Option International: 14.5 with 14 in the English Language component

International Baccalaureate

Typical Offer: Minimum 38 points with grades 6,6,6 at Higher Level.

International Students

English Language Qualifications:

We would normally require all applicants whose first language is not English to provide evidence of English language proficiency and we may ask you to take an English language test.

The minimum requirement for Politics with International Relations is an English Language qualification such as IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each component or above.. Scottish Highers

Typical Offer: AAAAB at Higher Level to include AA at Advanced Higher Level.

Typical Offer: AAA at GCE A Level, OR, grades AAB at GCE A Level AND Pass in the Welsh Baccalaureate Core
