Subject aims

This programme is designed to enable you to analyse changes in government policy and its impact on society.

You will explore current issues such as:

  • even more people cohabit now than in previous years – is marriage declining in importance?
  • what does it mean to be a modern father?
  • what role should Britain play in Europe?
  • in an ageing population, how will society fund long term care?

The programme focuses on:

  • the historical evolution of social policy and the welfare state
  • the principles behind state welfare, such as social justice, inclusion and citizenship
  • the factors that shape policy-making and implementation
  • comparative analysis, in particular in relation to European issues
  • the critical analysis of substantive policy areas, such as social security and health.

Teaching and learning

Lead lectures, tutor-led seminars and tutorials, student-led seminars, IT practical sessions, practical workshops and problem-based learning scenarios.

Methods of assessment

Written unseen examinations, seen examinations, coursework, practical presentations (group and individual), placement report, research reports, dissertation.
