Sport and Exercise Science

Entry requirements

Personal Statement

The personal statement is important in demonstrating your motivation for applying to the programme. Be sure to include specific examples of any experience you have that is relevant to sports science, such as courses or events that you have attended or work experience that you have done.

GSCE Requirements:

Essential: minimum oGrade C or above in English Language, Mathematics and two science subjects 

Preferred: Applicants with a strong GCSE profile which includes A grades in Mathematics and sciences

A Levels

Typical Offer:  AAA

  • we welcome applications with predicted grades of AAB or above, although all applications will be considered relative to their individual context.

Essential:

  • A-levels (A2) must include at least one basic science subject (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology). Psychology can also be accepted as a science if combined with a sports-related A Level (eg PE or Sport Studies).
  • see GCSE requirements above
  • General Studies is excluded
  • languages which are intended for non-native speakers are not normally acceptable when taken by native speakers of that language.

Retakes

  • In order to remain fair to all applicants, consideration will only be given to grades achieved in the first sitting of a full Level 3 qualification. An exception to these guidelines may be considered when there are mitigating circumstances. Should this be the case, the Academic Reference must detail any relevant information. All applicants should declare those qualifications already achieved and detail those being retaken in the 'not yet completed' section of the application

Access to HE Diploma

We welcome applications from students studying an Access to HE Diploma in Science.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a high academic standard and may be invited to attend an interview.

Typical offer:

Pass the Access to HE Diploma in Science,  with at least 36 credits achieved from units awarded at Distinction and 3 credits achieved at Merit or Distinction. Applicants must also achieve GCSE equivalences in English and maths, if equivalent qualifications have not already been achieved.

BTEC

Extended Diploma (18 units) 

Only applicants studying one of the following BTEC Extended Diplomas will be considered:

  • Sport and Exercise Science
  • Applied Science
  • Health and Social Care (Health Sciences)

 Typical offer: D*D*D*, with Distinctions in at least 7 science-related units.

Please note that we will not consider applications from students studying the following BTEC Extended Diplomas (unless combined with a science A Level):

  • Sport (Performance and Excellence)
  • Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness)
  • Sport (Outdoor Adventure)
  • Health and Social Care (Health Studies)
  • Health and Social Care (Social Care)

 Students studying these qualifications may wish to consider applying to Sport and Social Sciences or to Sports Performance.

 

Diploma (12 units) 

Applicants studying one of the following BTEC Diplomas will be considered if they are also studying one A2 subject, preferably a science subject: 

  • Sport and Exercise Science
  • Applied Science
  • Health and Social Care (Health Sciences)

Typical offer: D*D*, with Distinctions in at least 5 science-related units, plus an A Level at grade A.

Applicants studying other BTEC Diplomas will be considered if they are also studying a science A Level (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology).

Typical offer: D*D*, plus an A Level at grade A.

 

90-credit Diploma / Subsidiary Diploma

Applicants studying a BTEC 90-credit Diploma or Subsidiary Diploma will be considered if they are also studying 2 A Levels, one of which must be a science subject (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology).

Typical offer: D*AA

 

Cambridge Pre-U

Typical Offer: D3, D3, D3

Essential:

  • Principal Subjects must include at least one basic science subject.

Diplomas

Will consider Advanced Diplomas where combined with the Additional and Specialist Learning outlined below.

Advanced Diploma at grade A with grade A in all units of the Principal Learning and grade A in the Extended Project.

The Extended Project should be a piece of written work such as a piece of applied research.

Required Additional and Specialist Learning:

One A level at grade A which must be a physical science (considered as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Human Biology only)

Essential Level 2 requirement:

Grade B in Maths and English Language and at least one Science subject at GCSE

European Baccalaureate

Typical Offer: 80%, see above subject requirements.

Extended Project

We look favourably on applicants who are doing the Extended Project, provided that it is in a subject relating to the degree programme.

International Baccalaureate

Typical Offer: 36 points to include a science subject at HL grade 6.

International Students

We accept a wide range of non-UK qualifications as entry either to our Foundation Year or directly on to the first year of our undergraduate programmes.  For further information please visit our International Office web page.

English Language Qualifications:

We would normally require all applicants whose first language is not English to provide evidence of English language proficiency and we may ask you to take an English language test.

The minimum requirement for Sports and Exercise Science is IELTS grade 6.0 with no mark less than 6.0 in any of the elements. Applicants should submit their results by 31st July. Irish Leaving Certificate

Typical Offer: AAAABB at Higher level, which must include at least one Grade A in a Science subject.

Scottish Highers

Typical Offer: AAAAA at Higher level to include AA at Advanced Higher level in at least one science subject.

Welsh Baccalaureate

Typical Offer:  AAA  or AAB at A level plus Welsh Baccalaureate Core which must include one Science subject.
