Sports Performance

Subject in detail

Subject aims

The two year Foundation Degree enables you to integrate sports training and academic study. Programme units will allow you to develop skills and knowledge in several areas relevant to training and competition, from your own physical conditioning to performance analysis.

This programme will be ideal if you are already performing at a very high standard in your chosen sport.

On completion of the Foundation Degree at the required academic standard, there is an opportunity to progress to the BSc (Hons) in Sport (Sport Performance) (Work Based Learning). This builds on the expertise acquired from earlier study and further develops your critical, analytical and reflective approach, which is valued by employers.

This programme is designed to appeal to those who have shown strong academic performance in previous studies.

Teaching and learning

The early stages of the programme will explore a range of fundamental topics and equip you with a range of basic study skills. In addition, you will develop abilities in your chosen sport throughout the programme.

As you progress through the programme there is increasing emphasis on developing your own observational, evaluative and analytical skills in the design of training regimes and programmes.

A variety of teaching, learning and assessment methods are used on the programme. These include methods that encourage experiential learning through group discussion, practical workshops, lectures, seminars, and student-led discussion forums. You will be encouraged to reflect upon your work-based learning.

Methods of assessment

Evidence of individual achievement of learning outcomes is assessed using a variety of assessment methods, including group presentations, practical coaching sessions, poster presentations, reports, self-appraisals, oral presentations and examinations.
