Placements and careers
Placements
In your third year, you will have the opportunity to take a placement year. Placements are available in all aspects of the sports industry, coaching and teaching. They provide valuable practical experience on which you can draw when resuming your studies in the final year. Many placements are offered overseas.
We have established links with major industry partners across a variety of employment pathways. Recent placements have been in:
- schools
- sports clubs
- government organisations (such as the British Olympic Association)
- sports marketing
- management companies (such as LOCOG and Octagon)
- sport management positions (at professional football clubs).
Applications for placement can be very competitive and it is your responsibility to secure the position, but at all times you will be supported by our placements team.

Careers
The majority of our graduates from the BA Sport and Social Science programme choose careers in one of the programme’s main emphases; sports management and policy, sports coaching and development, physical education teaching; or, the health, physical activity and fitness industries.
Several choose to study at Masters or PhD level on programmes such as Sport Management, Sociology of Sport, or Sports Coaching.
A smaller proportion of our graduates choose to continue with high performance sport and commence full-time training and competition after completion of their degree.
