The system of higher education in England is coming under sustained attack, as described in the recent book 'The Assault on Universities':

· Tuition fees are increasing

· Widening participation is under threat

· Public funding for arts, humanities and social sciences subjects is disappearing

· Private for-profit providers are being encouraged to step in and cream off profits from more lucrative courses

· University staff pay and pensions are suffering cuts

The English university system is not perfect, and its mission, its purpose and its relationship to the rest of society need to be re-examined - but are the current government plans part of the solution or part of the problem?
