Previous Research projects

Much of the work in the Centre builds on research projects that have been conducted over the past 6 years in both knowledge intensive and Professional Services firms. We briefly describe these projects and give details of the publications associated with them:

People and Performance in Knowledge Intensive Firms

This project was sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and sought to understand the links between HR practices and organisational performance.  It drew on detailed case studies of 6 knowledge intensive firms in the software, financial services and research and development sectors.

There have been a series of publications emanating from this project aimed at academic and practitioner audiences.

Managing People and Knowledge in Professional Service Firms

This project was also sponsored by the CIPD and examined the ways in which HRM strategy, structure and practice could enhance the ability of PSFs to manage their knowledge and ‘know how’.  It drew extensively on research carried out in 12 PSFs in the legal, software, consulting and creative sectors.  This research was carried out in collaboration with Scott Snell and colleagues based at Cornell University in the United States.

There have been a series of publications emanating from this project aimed at academic and practitioner audiences.
