APPENDIX 5
Syndicate Groups - Negative aspects of design research
NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF DESIGN RESEARCH
Lack of Holistic understanding and modelling:
Inappropriate use of mathematical models.
Lack of focus on real designers in their real situation. (e.g. communication problems)
Too much focus on "new design"
Focus on single aspects as whole answer
Too much faith in computers (e.g. AI) (e.g. electronic mock ups)
Promotion of CAD at expense of "visibility" of design to all involved: Lost touch with hardware
Promotion of teamwork at the expense of "professional" design
Academic way of working / "missing link"
Research without design experience or study
"Island solutions"
Working on assumed or contrived problems
Lack of scientific approach two evaluation / validation of research
Lack of "transfer" of research to "industry"
Rigidity / constraints caused by CAD, and difficulty of changing systems
Failures
- Generic Rapid Tooling.
- CFD.
- Design rationale management.
- Effectiveness of industry / University links.
- Failure of some optimisation algorithms.
- Material selection software - irrelevant?
- Poor impact of cognitive design methods.
- Poor use of 3D CAD because of behavioural conflict.
- Failure to introduce change in industry.
- Finding out information on success stories (good design case studies.)
