Industry Requirements

Easier to use, more pragmatic, systems analysis and design methods and tools for identifying, describing and supporting engineering business processes.. Typical software CASE tools and methodologies are too prescriptive and require considerable background knowledge to use successfully.

Better methods, processes, tools for identifying, describing, comparing, finding, storing, retrieving knowledge (as opposed to data) for more effective reuse. Today it is still too difficult to search intelligently, find and reuse knowledge effectively. Workflow methods, processes and tools that can model and support iterative, incremental prototype driven lifecycles for the development of engineering design support systems.

Design Research Achievements

I find this difficult to answer. I suppose areas I feel are progressed a bit are

Design Research Weaknesses

I cannot really answer this

5 Requirements of Industry

Computers are reasonably good at optimisation: humans have relevant domain knowledge. The combination can be powerful if the interface is effective .

Advantage: Effective use of a designer's expertise.

Also, to enhance communication between different sections of industry.

An automated system, possibly with limited interaction, which, following a decision regarding the structure of a system, identifies those nodules that are available 'off-the-shelf', those that can be achieved by modification of an off-the-shelf module, and those that must be designed from scratch.

5 Achievements of Design Research

5 Weaknesses of Design Research

Freedom to look ahead 10 years.

5 Key issues to be addressed over next 10 years

The determination of how accurate a model needs to be. A device within an environment may not need an accurate model, depending upon the accuracy to which the environment's behaviour must be calculated.

Advantage: Insight into function of component and allowable tolerances on its manufacture. Reduced simulation cost of system's behaviour.

Optimisation methods can be applied to reliability as well as performance.

My perspective is from the automotive supply industry, having worked with £20-30m turnover medium technology companies or divisions of companies. I have worked in both product and process desitn as well as business development.
