It is in fact a great big rottweiler, jealously guarding a favourite toy. Any applied mathematician will tell you that Reality must be approached with caution. Algebraist comes up, growls "LEAVE IT!", picks up toy, inspects it from every angle, rotates any rotatable parts, replaces toy (as like as not upside-down) between Reality's front paws, and mutters "nice toy---good dog". Group theory is thus essentially a dominance thing with Reality. Geoff & Olga transform this revelation into a truism. They are also to be congratulated for the least gratuitous use of the number 1729 in a mathematical context. Date: Thu, 1 Feb 1996 11:02:08 +0100
