Victoria Jones, the cheechee (Anglo-Indian) engine-driver's daughter, is about to become a Sikh (she doesn't go through with it). This book, being about India, sex and steam engines in about equal proportions, was always going to make a successful film and duly did. The places referred to in the clue are important ones on the fictional map of India: Chandrapore is the location of most of A Passage to India and Malgudi is the southern town invented by R.K. Narayan as the setting of many of his novels.
