Levi isn't the only Italian Jewish author who trained as a chemist, but this time it's him. He is on the train back from Auschwitz, moving slowly through the Hungarian countryside, and has been sent with a bucket and a rope made of his fellow-travellers' belts to get water from a village well when the train starts.
