Sinclair Lewis, Elmer Gantry.

This book appeared in the 1920s but might almost be appearing now. It charts the rise of a spurious preacher who bears a startling resemblance to the less trustworthy American television preachers. These words, however, are uttered by an even less scrupulous but still more effective woman preacher whom Elmer Gantry encounters. The author's namesake C.S. Lewis is referred to in the clue: the style is remote from his but one imagines he approved of the book.
