James Davenport

Professor James Davenport
(University of Bath: School of Mathematical Sciences)
holds a Royal Society/EPSRC Industrial Fellowship for 1995--96, to collaborate with NAG Ltd. These awards, of which there are five per year, are designed to encourage closer links between academia and industry. This is a first for NAG and a first for the University of Bath: indeed, as far as we know, it is the first one ever awarded in computing.

Bridging the gap between University-led theory on the one hand and the needs of users on the other would seem to be important at this stage in the development of computer algebra, when these pieces of software are now being used by thousands of people who are not developers, and do not understand the mathematics on which the algorithms are based.
