The Skills Centre is running the following 1:1 support for students at any stage of study to help them succeed in their Semester 2 assessments. Please encourage your students to take up these sessions.
Our 50-minute 1:1 writing tutorials give your students an opportunity to receive personalised, constructive feedback on a piece of their writing from a specialist writing tutor. They are available until the end of Semester 2 (30 April).
This provides a safe and informal space for students to discuss and explore any aspect of writing and ask questions about their work. The tutor will prioritise areas for development and signpost further support available.
Tutorials are run online through Microsoft Teams at different times to fit flexibly around students’ schedules. The option of in-person appointments in the Virgil Building will be available after Easter. Alternatively, feedback from the tutor can be requested via email.
Exam skills appointments
In response to student feedback from Faculty Forums on the Semester 1 online assessments, we are also pleased to offer new online 1:1 exams skills appointments from 12 April to 7 May.
These 50-minute online sessions are designed to help students prepare for different kinds of exams (for example open-book, multiple choice, short answer, problem solving, essay) and develop effective exam strategies. They can ask questions, discuss any concerns with one of our expert exam skills tutors and thereby reduce any stress and anxiety.
The appointments will run on Teams or Zoom and are available at different times to fit flexibly around other commitments. The option of in-person appointments in the Virgil Building will be available after Easter.
Support for online exams module
We have also developed an interactive Support for Online Exams short course on Xerte which provides more information about online open book exams on Inspera. The course also runs through some top tips for successful exam preparation.
We know from feedback that our 1:1 sessions equip students with the skills and confidence they need to take their academic writing to a new level - they often tell us they wish they had known about the tutorials sooner! In response to student feedback, we're delighted to extend this tutorial support to help students perform to their full potential in this Semester's online assessments. - Tim Ratcliffe, Academic Skills Course Leader.
