Most people experience difficulties in their relationships at some point in their lives and we will all have been let down by people, and at times we may feel that we have let down others. However, some experiences in relationships can leave a lasting impact on how we feel about ourselves, other people and the world around us.

The main purpose of this new research is to measure if people with some mental health difficulties have different experiences of being let down, and of letting others down. They are conducting the research to inform future practice, including the therapy that certain individuals might receive.

Masters candidate behind the study from the Department of Psychology, Evangelia Gerakianaki, explains: “There is a certain stigma surrounding the effects of betrayal and hurt on our mental wellbeing which can prevent some people from coming forward to talk about it. With this research we are trying to better understand its impacts on our mental health with the hope of improving future clinical care, psychological therapies and mental health practice.”
