The Faculty of Engineering & Design has had a fantastic year for placements. 472* students have started their placement this summer compared to 407 last year. The most dramatic increase has been in Chemical Engineering with placement numbers up 34%.
Our students are on placement with a wide range of our industrial partners. From the well-known such as Airbus to the lesser known such as Delphi Technologies who are a global enterprise focused on innovating propulsion systems and aftermarket solutions so that passenger cars and commercial vehicles drive cleaner, better and further and who have taken eleven students this year. We have students making ice-cream for Unilever, building Hinkley Point C and travelling the world with Hawk-Eye.
With 77 students sharing their expertise and enthusiasm on placement in the local area, the Faculty is boosting the South West’s reputation as a leader in aerospace and advanced manufacturing. At the same time our students are placed internationally working for tech start-ups in San Francisco, developing the next generation of semi-conductors in Norway, and designing web tools for low-carbon emission buildings at Arup in Amsterdam.
Industry engagement in research and in student placements go hand in hand. It was in 2013 that we set up an exclusive relationship for work placements with the Compact Muon Solenoid at CERN. The relationship has gone from strength to strength and we are now affiliate member of the experiment group with planned collaborations on PhDs, undergraduate research projects and even more work placements. The Vice-Chancellor and President led a delegation to CERN in September and met with two engineering placement students.
Our world-leading research and innovation institute, IAAPS is enabling the automotive industry to transition to ultra-low and zero emission vehicles. At the same time, with 84 students on placement in the sector, the Faculty is developing the next generation of automotive engineers. We are proud to have 11 students on placement at Nissan and have developed exclusive relationships with Renault, McLaren and Williams F1. Next time you watch the Grand Prix think of our students whose hard work has gone into those cars.
We are the preferred partner of many top companies thanks to the outstanding partnership between academic staff and the placement team, as Professor Tina Düren explains: “I have been the academic supervisor for placement students at DOW, Barry, for five years now. Returning to the same company year after year has allowed me to build up a close relationship with the students’ supervisors and to get first-hand feedback on how our students manage the transition from learning in a university environment to applying their knowledge in the workplace. I would like to emphasise that all of this is only possible because of the fantastic work of the placement office.”
We always recognise the unique interests of each student and offer the best possible support to them. One of our placement student, Jey Ashokkumaar shares that: "Receiving my placement at Monodraught really turned my year around. I had been severely ill during my exams that year and had to suspend my next university year. With the help of the amazing placement team, I was able to put that year to use and use the skills I had developed during my studies at Monodraught. Great place to work, fantastic year."
Most important to remember is how fantastic our students are and the effort they put into both applying for and completing placements. They are a credit to both their placement providers and the Faculty.
