Assertiveness

This course introduces the fundamentals of assertiveness and how to practice this to aid communication in the workplace.

Course overview

2024/25 Semester 1&2 courses: This half-day course (in-person workshop) will run three times this academic year.


The aim of this workshop is to enhance assertive skills and to provide effective approaches in all aspects of your professional role. This is an interactive session to allow space for practice and reflection.

Course structure

  • This course will be delivered on campus as an in-person event over a three hour session (including a short break)
  • There is a requirement to complete pre-work in advance of attending the in-person session

Pre-work

Review and complete pre-work for this course.


This course uses blended learning to make the most of your time, focusing the session on interaction, knowledge sharing and skills practice, so that you have time to think about applying these skills in your own job role.

Please note, you will need to complete a small amount of pre-course reading to set assertiveness in context.

The pre-work will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

  • Identify behavioural choices and their impact on communication and relationships in the workplace;
  • Discuss cultural differences in communication;
  • Describe the elements of assertive language;
  • Practice using assertive language in response to workplace situations

  • Listen, question and clarify in order to understand the other person’s needs

  • Be open and honest in workplace communication
  • Challenge inappropriate or exclusive practices / behaviour

Please note that attending the course does not provide evidence of achieving these behaviours. You will need to demonstrate them by applying your skills and knowledge.

Discussing your learning and development with your line manager

We assume that if you need permission or agreement to attend this course you will have arranged this before booking. To ensure the training is suitable and your learning can be transferred back to the workplace, you should also have discussed the following with your line manager:

  • how this training will help to deliver your individual/team goals
  • the expected outcomes (what is expected to change or improve as a result)
  • any support required post-course to enable you to transfer your learning back to the workplace

Your manager will receive an automated notification when you book or cancel a place on a course using ESS.
