Deadly Industry: Challenging Big Tobacco

New podcast - out now

The tobacco industry has spent decades honing its deadly strategies to maximise its profits. Despite the well-known dangers of tobacco, there are still 8 million tobacco-related deaths each year.

Why, decades after its deceptions were uncovered, is this industry still so powerful and profitable?

Our new podcast, based on ground-breaking research, reveals the tactics of the tobacco industry. Experts from the University of Bath and further afield consider the progress made in countering this deadly industry and what still needs to be done.

We also look into how these same strategies provide a playbook for other industries that trade in unhealthy commodities and make billions at the expense of our, and the planet’s, health.

In this first series we investigate key topics such as the murky world of illicit tobacco products, big tobacco’s role in environmental destruction and the industry’s manipulation of science.

Our first three episodes were released Tuesday 28 January, with the remaining five episodes being released one per week. You will find links to the original research referenced in each episode within the show notes on your chosen podcast platform.

New episodes will appear on this page as they are released, and will be available to listen to on all major podcast platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music. To stay up to date with our latest episodes, don’t forget to subscribe.
