Building confidence in your English

General English

This 10-week course will help you to improve your general English skills. You will improve your vocabulary and grammar and develop your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills.

You will also develop exam-taking strategies such as reading and listening for specific information.

You can prepare for three levels:

  • C2 Proficiency (CPE)
  • C1 Advanced (CAE) and
  • B2 First (FCE).

The course is for all undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff who use English as a second language.

Erasmus+, exchange and visiting students can get six credits by completing one of these courses.

Student view

In their feedback on the Semester 1 2020/21 course, students gave an average rating of 4.6/5.0 on the quality of teaching and 4.5/5.0 on the quality of the teaching resources.

Visiting and Exchange student Carolina Larsson from Denmark said:

Some things which I appreciated with the course were the opportunity to learn the differences between formal and informal British English. Also, since I was the only exchange student from my university, it was a great chance to meet students from other programs. Even though I am a natural science student I have come to appreciate language more. I believe it is one subject which really can give you the ability to 'knock down walls' and reach out to people you can’t communicate with in your native tongue. I am really grateful that you offer this course to students at the University of Bath.

Chen Lin, MSc Marketing, from Taiwan, said:

I have made progress with my writing skills and speaking. In the class, we run through grammar, vocabulary, listening and writing and because it is a small class, we have many opportunities to communicate with each other. Each week, there will be a theme based on the textbook, such as environment or work, which we discuss in class. We also have the chance to work on an essay-style writing task, then the lecturer will provide feedback on structure, word choices, or grammar errors. In this course, no one is a native speaker, so we are more tolerant of mistakes, we dare to try to express ideas, and build self-confidence.

How to enrol for the course

The next English language course will run from 12 October - 16 December 2021.

Completion of set homework and preparation for classes is also a course requirement.

Before signing up for a course please make sure that the day and time do not clash with your academic timetable using your MyTimetable.

Registration and placement test details for the Semester 1 Academic Year 2021/22 course will be available in due course.
