General English

This 10-week course will help you to improve your general English skills. You will improve your vocabulary and grammar and develop your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills.

You will also develop exam-taking strategies such as reading and listening for specific information.

You can prepare for three levels:

  • C2 Proficiency (CPE)
  • C1 Advanced (CAE) and
  • B2 First (FCE).

The course is for all undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff who use English as a second language.

Erasmus+, exchange and visiting students can get six credits by completing one of these courses.

How to enrol

You will need to register for and take a placement test as soon as possible from 30 September (deadline 19 October 2020) so you can be put in the most suitable class for you.

Once you have taken the placement test, your teacher will give you the details of a course book that you have to buy. Completion of set homework and preparation for classes is also a course requirement.

Classes will start from 13 October 2020 at the following times. They will last up to 90 minutes and be delivered on Microsoft Teams:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays: 11.15am (for each level) or
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays: 6.15pm (for each level)

Before signing up for a course please make sure that the day and time do not clash with your academic timetable using your MyTimetable.

Optional Cambridge English exam

Cambridge English exams are accepted by many academic institutions, professional bodies and employers as a measure of your English level. Taking a Cambridge English exam increases your potential to develop your academic career and employability. The qualification lasts a lifetime.

We have previously offered the opportunity to take a Cambridge English exam at the University of Bath and we hope to do so again in the future. Further details will be published here in due course.
