Designed for senior policymakers and decision-makers from government and the third sector, the IPR Policy Fellowship Programme: Sustainable and automated transport offers you the opportunity to explore the policy questions, or challenges, you are looking to address in your professional role.

Structured around tailored one-to-one or group cohort virtual meetings, our programme is delivered online and enables you to meet with world-class academics across the University of Bath.

Engaging with academics across the University inspires Policy Fellows with new ideas and perspectives. In this way the Policy Fellowship Programme drives innovation, helping Fellows apply new tools, models, and frameworks to improve the ways in which policy is developed and delivered.

The University of Bath is at the forefront of cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research on sustainable and automated transport.

It is home to the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) - a world-leading centre of excellence for research, innovation, enterprise, and education, supporting the future direction of the automotive industry and public policy with over 60 experts working in and developing research across these areas.

In addition, the University’s post-graduate EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems trains and develops people for the future of net zero transport and automotive knowledge in the UK.

The University has also recently launched a Bath Beacon on Sustainable and automated transport. This research project brings together researchers from across the University to solve key problems facing sustainable transportation systems, focusing on transportation and autonomous vehicles, with plans to expand to rail, maritime, and air travel.

Overall, the University’s automotive ecosystem brings together fundamental discovery-led research and training in electric vehicles; transition to net zero transport systems; grid security and green supply; future fuels; aviation and shipping mobilisation and future engineering skills with academics from science, engineering, mathematics, social policy, psychology, health, and management - leading breakthroughs across a wide range of application domains.

Our Policy Fellowship Programme: Sustainable and automated transport is free-of-charge, and our team will be able to facilitate future meetings, networking, or collaborations with our academic experts, following your initial Fellowship meetings.

Tailoring your Policy Fellowship experience

To ensure the programme works for you, we will have an initial discussion with you in advance of your visit, about your areas of interest and motivations for taking part. We will ask you to prepare between six and eight policy questions around which you would like to focus your discussions. We will also ask for a biography to outline your background and current professional role.

Individual or group meetings

You are welcome to apply to our programme as an individual. You may also apply as a group cohort if you are from the same department or organisation, and you would like to explore the same questions.

What to expect

Using your questions, or your choice of area of Bath expertise, as a framework, we will arrange a series of 40–60-minute virtual meetings with academics whose work is relevant to your policy area.

Not all the people you meet with will be working directly in your area, or able to give specific answers to your questions. They will all, however, be able to engage in a thought-provoking discussion which will stimulate your, and their, thinking.
