February Half Term Conference – The Skills to Succeed

Has the jump to sixth form study been easy for you? Are you confident you can undertake university study? If you are one of the majority of students answering no to those questions then our Skills to Succeed conference will be able to help.

Join us on Tuesday 22 February for our Study Skills Conference to gain skills for success in the sixth form, university and beyond. You’ll hear from experts at the University of Bath about how developing your learning skills can boost your university application and help you attain high grades.

You’ll discover effective skills for academic writing, note-taking and referencing and hear from our current students on how these skills have helped them at university and how they can help you too.

The Skills to Succeed: Tuesday 22 February


Time Session and Overview
9.30 to 10.00 AM Welcome and the Importance of Skills at University - Learn more about the kind of skills that successful university students display and hear from Bath’s Academic Skills Centre about how you can receive support at university to master these skills to boost your achievement.
10.00 to 10.45 AM Academic writing - This workshop will enable you to identify the main features of academic writing and show you how to plan, structure and write impactful academic essays or assignments.
10.45 to 11.30 AM Note-taking - Discover key models to help you take notes more effectively. You’ll learn proven techniques for taking notes, keeping your work organised and preparing notes for effective revision.
11.30 to 12.15 PM Referencing and Plagiarism - In this session, you’ll learn more about plagiarism and why it’s important to avoid it. We’ll introduce you to the correct way to cite and reference different sources and demonstrate how to paraphrase correctly.
12.15 to 13.00 PM Summary Session and Q&A - In this final session, you’ll hear from our student ambassadors about their own experiences of making the transition from school or college to university.
