Work experience at University of Bath

The University offers a range of work experience placements for students in Year 10 or Year 12.

The University of Bath recognise that work experience is an important way to gain insight into the world of work. Time spend with an employer will broaden knowledge of industries and sectors, help inform and shape career decisions, and offer a way in which to explore the workplace in a risk-free environment.
We believe offering work experience opportunities enables us as an employer to benefit from the unique skills and insights young people can bring and provide opportunities for existing staff to supervise and mentor a young person, helping to develop their management and other professional and personal skills.

Work experience at University of Bath

Work experience is a short, unpaid placement for an individual to gain experience of a working environment. Appropriate activities are scheduled under the supervision and discretion of a work experience supervisor who takes full responsibility for the student during their time at the University.

This work experience is offered to enable the individual to develop employability skills for the future, provide an insight into jobs/careers they may wish to pursue. We also help students think more strategically about their personal goals and purpose behind succeeding in their studies.
Our aim is to provide as many opportunities as possible to the widest range of people, hence the restriction in length of placement.

Restrictions on work experience

  • We are currently not accepting applications for work experience. We will update this webpage in November with details of how to apply. Please also be aware that:
  • Work experience can only be approved if a supervisor/manager in the relevant department is available and has capacity to support the experience;
  • Work experience programmes are designed to provide an insight of working at a university and are typically 1 to 5 days in length. Shorter placements mean that we can better match demand with the work experience opportunities available.
  • This programme does not support longer placements (eg. an elective placement that lasts several weeks/months and is part of a university degree).

How do I apply

Please submit a covering letter:

  • Explaining what type of experience, you are seeking
  • What dates you are requesting work experience for
  • If you know what department / area you would like the experience in
  • What school you are currently attending and your year group
  • Enclose a CV (if you have one)

Submit to or call 01225 383774 to discuss opportunities further.

We prefer all queries related to work experience to be made by students themselves, rather than by friends, parents or guardians enquiring on their behalf. We believe that communicating is an excellent learning opportunity for students.

Applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, but should we receive a large volume of requests, then a selection process may be implemented where we may choose to prioritise students from under-represented groups or who attend schools classed as more disadvantaged.
