Writing Wednesdays

Find out how our fortnightly writing sessions can support your doctoral writing projects.

What is 'Writing Wednesdays' ?

Do you struggle to find the time, space or motivation to focus on your writing? Need help with a thesis chapter, confirmation report,  journal paper or funding application? If so, come along to a 'Writing Wednesdays' session.

'Writing Wednesdays' provide a dedicated space and a supportive environment to help you progress your writing projects. You'll be free from any distractions and benefit from knowing that everyone in the room wants to achieve the same thing.

Our Doctoral Engagement Ambassadors will welcome you at the start of each session and provide action planning sheets if you need any extra help to focus on achieving what you need to. There will be complimentary tea and coffee (bring your own Keep Cup) as well as biscuits to keep you going.

Due to popular demand, all our workshops will give you access to a writing tutor allowing for 1-1 support, should you need it. The tutor will be available from 13:30 - 14:15 on a non-bookable first come first served basis. Speak to the ambassador running the session to find out more.

Booking your place

Spaces for 'Writing Wednesdays' are limited and pre-bookable.

There are 20 bring-your-own-laptop spaces and five computer workstations available at each 'Writing Wednesdays' session. To secure your place, email your name along with your chosen date(s) and specify whether you need a computer workstation or a laptop space.

As spaces are given on a first come first served basis, you are advised to book as early as possible. This is an extremely popular session and we cannot guarantee a place on the day without a booking.

Making the most of the session

We know getting focused can sometimes be a struggle, which is why we've pulled together some handy tips from previous 'Writing Wednesdays' attendees.

Tips to help you before and during your writing session:

  • identify exactly what your writing project for the afternoon will be: a draft chapter, article, fellowship application or grant bid for example
  • do as much reading and researching before the session to allow more time for writing on the day
  • use the action planning sheets, they help you to plan your time
  • switch the internet off and put your phone in plane mode.
  • bring all the resources you need in hard form, on a USB or saved to your laptop
  • remember your charger!
