Equity, diversity and inclusion in SAMBa

Diversity is an essential component of SAMBa's success and enables us to deliver the best research and training experience.

Equity, diversity and inclusion are embedded into the ethos of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics (SAMBa). We believe a diverse group of students leads to creativity, exciting research, and impact.

Diversity is not something that should be forced, but developed from an inclusive and supportive culture, which makes everyone feel welcome. This is integral to the expectation we have that our students will not only support each other, but learn from each other.

We are proud to have a diverse group of students and staff contributing to SAMBa, including a representation of female students which is substantially above the national sector average.

Activities and support

We continually work hard to make all SAMBa infrastructure and activities as inclusive and accessible as possible. For example, we have recently upgraded to automatic doors throughout the main department building to improve accessibility for staff, students and visitors. SAMBa staff and students are involved with running and supporting many ED&I activities, including:

  • The University-wide anti-harassment campaign #BeTheChange
  • The Women in Mathematics network within the Department of Mathematical Sciences
  • The activities of the Equality and Diversity Committee in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, including the recent Athena SWAN Silver Award submission

Inclusion Matters

In 2018 we were awarded £527,000 from the EPSRC "Inclusion Matters" programme for our new research project,Reimagining Recruitment, to develop improved early-career recruitment practices in STEM subjects.

Reimagining Recruitment is an interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers in the Department of Psychology, investigating staff-student interactions in workshops, and possible lessons for recruitment and retention. The project builds directly on the hugely positive experiences we have had in SAMBa, which we hope to translate to tangible benefits for the wider STEM community.
