Requisites:
Aims: This unit aims to provide students with a theoretical understanding of concepts such as identity, difference, nationality and citizenship; to provide students with an insight into the contemporary debate on Italian identity; to provide students with ain-depth knowledge of the historical and political factors which have contributed to influence the construction of an Italian identity.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
* apply appropriate theoretical frameworks to the Italian situation
* understand the links between the different factors which influenced the construction of an Italian identity
* situate their understanding of Italian identity in an appropriate political and historical context.
Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/¬conduct/¬reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.
Content:
Theoretical approaches to the concepts of identity, nationality and citizenship. Analysis of the key passages in the construction of Italian national identity: the legacy of the Resistance; the role of traditional political parties; the influence of the Catholic Church; the rise to power of the Northern League. This unit is taught partly in Italian.
