Aims: To develop a comprehensive and critical understanding of the principles of business and social science analysis by teaching the basic principles of research strategy.
To reflect on the appropriateness, strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches to research.
To support students, within an active research community, in identifying their own original research questions.
Learning Outcomes:
To provide a comprehensive understanding of the methods of preparing, organising and writing up a dissertation for a Masters programme, in particular:
* the ground rules for setting about a research dissertation;
* synthesis of information from a variety of perspectives and sources;
* reflection on the suitability of diverse approaches for investigating and analysing problems.
Skills:

* Evaluate research and evidence critically to appropriate postgraduate standards using a variety of academic and non-academic sources;
* Synthesise information from a variety of academic perspectives and non-academic sources for a relevant understanding of theoretical and practical approaches;
* Develop skills to reflect on the suitability of diverse approaches for investigating and analysing problems;
* Development of time management, workload prioritisation and related planning skills.
Content:
Through discussion and evaluation of topics and methods students will review relevant literature, define hypotheses and outline a programme and methods of investigation for a selected topic.
(The development of a research topic will be continued with SP50114 Business and Community: Dissertation Planning 2 (F/T students).)
Identical to SP50115 Business and Community: Dissertation Planning 1 (P/T students) - for part-time students.
