Aims: To explore the socio-economic factors that have shaped sport from the Ancient Olympics to the modern era.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this Unit students will be able to:
Track the relationship between the development of the Olympic movement in relationship to dominant cultural attitudes of the time.
Link the progression of sport to changing assumptions about the nature of sport and its purpose into the modern era.
Express a critical appreciation of contemporary issues regarding the purpose of institutionalized sports within western societies.

Content:
Students will study changes in the history of sport from the ancient Olympic games, through the Victorian period and the industrial revolution into the present day.
Students will study the rise of the modern Olympic movement in relation to social attitudes and values of the time.
Changes in the structure and function of sport will be analysed with respect to public interest, political intentions, as well as the influence that these have on gender, sexual orientation, and race.
