Aims: To introduce Boolean algebra.
To apply Boolean algebra to the analysis and design of simple combinatorial and sequential digital electronic circuits.
To introduce the laws of Coulomb, Gauss, Ampere and Faraday.
To apply the above laws to the analysis of simple electromagnetic field problems.
To give an introduction to the principles of electromagnetic wave propagation.
Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to: Analyse and design simple combinatorial and sequential digital electronic circuits using gates and bistable devices. Solve electrostatic and magnetostatic problems having simple geometries. Apply Faraday's law to time-varying electromagnetic problems. Understand the production of electromagnetic waves and phenomenon such as reflection and refraction. Calculate basic wave properties (e.g. amplitude, phase, speed etc.).
Numeracy; problem solving; working independently.
Boolean algebra and minimisation of functions. Digital gates, combinational logic and simple digital circuits. Sequential logic, flip-flops and simple counters. Electric and magnetic fields. Coulomb, Gauss, Ampere and Faraday's Laws. Simple magnetic circuits. Properties of waves.
